First of all, all my Martishor cords/strings/amulets and tassels are entirely handmade by me. I personally make them.  My handmade amulets are original and unique because they have new & creative designs & shapes and they go very well by its self or along with absolutely any gift offered during the Martishor/March Month season. I've been making this style of martishor for about 50 years, since 1967.
The cord/string is made from white & red silk thread, extra fine manually twisted. The cord/string could be just a little bit thicker if you will inquire so.

Materials:  "Tassels" are made from silk-viscose/polyester/cotton threads, or could be made from wool/acrylic yarn

.
"Tassels" are a Little Tubes shape and they come in 3 (three) options of sizes and 2 (two) color combinations:

  • one end RED and other end WHITE, w. red & white twisted string,
  • One end BLUE and other end WHITE with Blue & White String (Curently this item is out of stock, but could be made by Order)

Measurements: Approximately 0.5 - 1 inch High x

                                                     0.25- 3/4 inch Wide

Cord length could vary: from 15 - 18 inches.

If there is a specific cord/string length desire, please contact me in advance or send me a inquiry note along with your order, regarding any specifications. I will be happy to please you.

Cord consistency: could be made from 2 silk threads (1 thread White + 1 thread Red) or
4 silk threads (2 threads White + 2 threads Red). If you would like a specific thickness, please message me and let me know which thickness you would love to order. Specific tassels do not "allow" a heavier cord thickness. Keep in your mind there must be a balance (in look) between tassels and cord/string.

The cord will come packed in a small clear cellophane bag : 2.1/4 x 3.1/4 (inches)

I accept large orders and specific characteristics (larger size of the tassels, thicker string/cord, specific decorations), but you need to notify me ahead of time to be able to make them and fit in your time frame, On large orders I may offer a price adjustment, so just send me a message prior you place an order.

Facts about this traditional amulet:

Martishor (Mărțișor) is a Romanian traditional celebration time at the beginning of spring, on March the 1st[1] in Romania, Moldova, and all territories inhabited by Romanians. Alike, though not identical customs can be found in Bulgaria (see Martenitsa), while similar ones exist in Albania, and Italy.

The word Mărțișor is the diminutive of March month, the Romanian named month: Martie, the old folk name for March (Martie, in modern Romanian), and thus literally means "little March". It is also the folk name for the month.

Mărțișor, marț and mărțiguș are all names for the red and white fine twisted cord with endings hanging red and white tassels customarily given on the 1st day of March. (The string can also be blue and white, but this choice is not longer in use ).

Giving this amulet (talisman) to people you respect, appreciate or you love, is an old tradition, and it is believed that wearing this amulet that will attract good luck and the wearer will be strong and healthy for the year to come. It is also a symbol of the coming spring. Usually, both women and men wear it pinned to their clothes, close to the heart, or attached to the wrist, or to the phone, or to the purse, etc., until the last day of March, when they tie it to a fruit-tree twig. In some regions, a gold or silver coin hangs on the string and is worn around the neck. After wearing it for a certain length of time, they buy red wine and sweet cheese with the coin, according to a belief that their faces would remain beautiful and white as cheese and rubicund as the wine, all year.

In modern times, and especially in urban areas, the Mărțișor lost most of its talisman properties and became more a symbol of friendship, love, appreciation and respect to all the Women in our lives:
Mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, girlfriend, cousin, wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, coworker, boss, . The black color threads were replaced by red, but the delicate wool or silk string is still a ‘cottage industry’ among people in the countryside, who comb out the wool, dye the floss, and twist it into thousands of tassels. In some areas, the amulets are still made with black and white string, to ward off evil. Related to Martisor and also symbol for spring in Romania is the snowdrop flower.

Enjoy!!
